The Matavén Forest spans 1.8 million hectares in Colombia, home to diverse ecosystems and Indigenous communities. The Matavén Project is a long-term conservation initiative designed to protect this vital rainforest, reduce the affects of global warming, and support sustainable development.
The Matavén Project is an Indigenous-led initiative that safeguards the rainforest while providing sustainable livelihoods. Through community-driven conservation, we’re stopping deforestation, protecting rare species, and reducing over 35 million tons of CO₂ emissions to date.
✅ Forest Protection – Indigenous guards patrol 37 routes to keep the forest safe.
✅ Biodiversity Conservation – 17 endemic species protected, plus 200+ others.
✅ Sustainable Development – Training, better healthcare, education, and clean water access for local communities.
✅ Climate Impact – A 30-year plan to prevent over 108 million tons of CO₂ emissions.
This project is led by ACATISEMA, the Indigenous leadership of Matavén, and co-developed with Mediamos F&M S.A.S.. Together, we’re ensuring that environmental protection goes hand in hand with Indigenous rights and economic empowerment.
The Matavén Project meets all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and is certified by Verra’s VCS & CCB Gold Level—global standards for high-impact climate projects.
This isn’t just about offsetting carbon. It’s about supporting a future where Indigenous leadership, forest conservation, and sustainable development thrive together.
